Chapter 3: A Focus on Problem Solving

  1. Why is building perseverance something that is important for math students?
  2. Choose a problem from the chapter. Solve it. Describe the four stages of the inquiry process in your solution.
  3. Find a “problem” in a textbook that doesn’t fit the criteria for what makes a good problem described in this chapter. Why does it not fit the criteria?
  4. Apply the turn-it-around strategy to create a number problem and a geometry problem that would be suitable for elementary school students.
  5. How are the emergent problem solving strategies different from the simpler strategies?
