Chapter 18: Collecting and Describing Data

  2. What are some typical problems students have in using Venn diagrams? Choose on of the problems you mentioned. How could you design instruction to address it?
  3. What is an appropriate sequence of activities for students to engage in when learning to ask good survey questions?
  4. How could knowing that if the same amount is added or subtracted from all data values in a set then the mean increases or decreases by that same value be a helpful skill for students?
  5. Why might it be better for your students to use the term mean than the term average to talk about that particular statistic?
  6. What are the benefits to the student of asking them to create a set of data with particular properties, e.g. a mean of 8 and a range of 10 as compared to calculating those statistics with provided data sets?
